For too long nutrition has been a neglected science so far as sports performance is concerned. In this book Wilf Paish redresses the imbalance by giving simple, practical advice for all those involved in sport, whether as a performer or coach. Starting with a basic discussion of how energy is obtained from food, the author goes on to consider more specialist areas of nutrition, including:

■ dietary considerations for women

■ vitamin and other supplements

■ the effects of alcohol, tobacco and sleep

■ energy requirements for individual sports

■ suggested specialist menus

A former senior lecturer at Carnegie College of Further Education and National Athletics Coach from 1964 to 1980, Wilf Paish was Tessa Sanderson’s coach when she won the Olympic javelin gold medal in Los Angeles in 1984. He is the author of numerous books and articles on the subject of sports nutrition.
